Ceremony microphones and how to prevent feedback

Which microphone suits narrators, choirs and musicians at a ceremony, when wireless or wired is better, what causes feedback and how to prevent it.

Most ceremony faults are about microphones: feedback, a narrator nobody hears, a battery that dies mid-ceremony. Almost all of them can be prevented beforehand.

Wireless or wired?

  • Wireless: for a moving host, speakers who come and go, and audience questions. Needs fresh batteries and frequency checks.
  • Wired: for the lectern, choir and musicians in fixed positions. More reliable, no batteries.

Preventing feedback

  • Speakers in front of the speaker line, not behind it
  • Every microphone tested at ceremony level
  • Unused microphones muted
  • An engineer at the mixer who reacts immediately

Frequently asked questions

Why does the microphone squeal?

Feedback happens when sound from a speaker goes back into the microphone and is amplified again and again, usually when the microphone is too close to or pointed at a speaker, or the level is too high.
