Most school ceremonies in Israel are held in the courtyard. It fits all the parents, but for sound it is one of the hardest spaces. What works in a hall does not always work outside.
Sound spreads out
Outdoors there are no walls to reflect sound. Instead of two big speakers by the stage, we spread speakers so the last rows hear clearly without blasting the front row.
Wind and background noise
Wind on a microphone causes thumps, and courtyards have traffic and air conditioners. Wind shields and correct microphone placement make the difference between clear speech and guessing.
Power, cables and safety
There is not always an outlet near the stage. We check power in advance and keep cables out of the children's walkways, taped down where needed.
Evening ceremonies need light
Once it gets dark, the narrator needs light to be seen and to read. Basic stage lighting is part of sound for an evening ceremony.
